Imation Solid State Drives

Flash Based Drives to 128 GB

Imation's Solid State Disk (SSD) line of products are powered by technology from Mtron and consist of both the MOBI and PRO product families. The drives are served in SATA and now SATA II and PATA flavors, ranging in capacity from 16 to 128 GB.

All of the drives in the product line are Flash-memory based and feature a 1 million hour MTBF rating. Dynamic and static wear leveling algorithms, along with 7-bit ECC are leveraged to extend data retention to a listed 10 years (at 77 Degrees Fahrenheit). The drives are served in both 2.5" and 3.5" form factors and ship in multiple available capacities; the average access time is listed at one-tenth of a millisecond. The drives are designed and intended to be used as drop-in replacements for their platter-based counterparts; the vendor states that no special configuration is required.

The single product entry in the MOBI line is the MOBI 3000, a SATA (I) based drive offered in capacities of 16, 32, and 64 GB (2.5") or 16, 32, 64, and 128 GB (3.5"). Performance of the MOBI drive is listed at 100 MB/80 MB/sec (sustained read/write) and 78,000/42,000 (sequential read/write IOPS). Random read/write IOPS are 16,000 and 130, respectively.

The PRO family is currently split into three drive offerings: the PRO 7000, the PRO 7000 PATA, and the PRO 7500.

The PRO 7000 is also a SATA I drive, served in capacities of 16 or 32 GB (2.5") or 16, 32, or 64 GB (3.5"). Performance is 120 MB/90 MB/sec (sustained read/write) and 81,000/45,000 (sequential read/write IOPS). Random read/write IOPS are 18,000 and 130, respectively.

New to the PRO family is the PRO 7000 PATA, with an ATA-7 compliant PATA interface. The drive ships in the same capacities/form factors as the MOBI 3000. Performance-wise, sustained read/write maximums are 130/120 MB/sec, respectively; while sequential IOPS are 27,000 and 48,000 (read/write). Random IOPS are listed at 18,000/125 read/write.

Finally, the PRO 7500 drive--also new--is delivered with a SATA II (3 Mb/sec) interface in capacities of 16, 32, 64, and 128 GB for both the 2.5" and 3.5 inch flavors (all capacities available in each form factor). Performance is the highest of the product family, with sustained read/write listed at 130 MB and 120 MB/sec, and sequential IOPS listed at 83,000 and 51,000. Random read/write IOPS are listed at 19,000 and 130, respectively.

The Imation SSDs are available now. The new PRO 7000 PATAs and the PRO 7500s have a starting price of about $500 (MSRP).
