Disk-Based Backup Appliances for SMB / SME

The Revinetix product line is targeted primarily to SMB/SME deployments and consists of disk-based backup appliances in both desktop and rackmount form factors.

At the core of each of the appliances is the vendor's RevOS operating system, which exposes a Web-based administration interface and includes backup, archiving, and recovery functions. Full, differential, and incremental backups are all supported, with the vendor noting that support is included for the backing up of multiple client operating systems over the network, including Windows, Netware, Linux, AIX, and Solaris (each client computer must have an agent running locally to facilitate the backup). The vendor states that backups can be scheduled to the individual desktop level for all network attached machines, with the appliances maintaining a catalog of saved files for later restoration purposes. Client-side data compression is also supported.

On top of the core OS platform, the vendor additionally offers add-on tools for specific backup scenarios. The Exchange Agent runs on Exchange Server 2003/2007 and facilitates backup and restore of individual mails or mailboxes; while the SQL Server Agent allows customers to backup live SQL Server databases while those databases are active and open. The Bare Metal Restore (BMR) feature facilitates disk imaging, cloning, and restoration for Linux, Windows, and NetWare client machines. Finally, the Network Storage option enables the devices to serve both as a backup appliance and a NAS device (I.E., the unused disk space on the drive can be used directly for file storage). Each of these add-on tools are currently bundled with the appliances as a promotional offering; the Exchange and SQL Server agents are typically separately priced offerings starting at about $216 for Exchange (50 mailboxes) and $999 for SQL Server.

A key hardware feature of the devices is their support for hot-swappable and/or USB hard drives; which, in combination with the RevOS software, enables the storage of critical data offsite (the user can select the critical data to be loaded onto a drive which can then be ejected from the enclosure for offsite storage). Support for device-to-device replication is also included when multiple units are deployed.

Two product lines are currently offered by the vendor.

The Volo line is a desktop appliance offered in two flavors; a 250 GB enclosure and a 750 GB (with RAID mirroring) enclosure.

The Sentio line are rackmountable appliances offered in 1, 2, 3, 4, or 8U enclosures, and ranging in capacity from 500 GB to 35 TB in licensed capacity (4 to 40 drives).

New features in the latest products come as a result of an upgrade to the vendor's RevOS, and include support for de-duplication, Active Directory support, and a tab menu-based user interface based on the Google Web Toolkit in which navigation and content changes are based on the tab selected by the user.

The Sentio and Volo products are available now, with Volo pricing starting at $2,595.
