ComplianceVault is a drop-in E-mail archiving and retrieval appliance that is targeted primarily to mid- to Enterprise-sized businesses. It allows for the continuous collection and indexing of a company's E-mail messages and attachments to both disk and WORM (Write-Once, Read Many) tape cartridges. When it's time to retrieve information, ComplianceVault can search for E-mails with features including support for wildcards, fuzzy and proximity searches, groupings for sub-queries, field groupings, and the ability to save searches.

The appliances ship in three rack-mountable (1U, 2U, 2U) flavors offering 3, 5, and 9.6 TB of raw disk space respectively; capacity that can be expanded to over 30 TB when used in conjunction with the vendor's xSeries disk storage. The vendor recommends that each appliance be combined with a Sony AIT tape library to facilitate the tape storage features.

ComplianceVault works with the organization's existing Exchange, Lotus Notes, Novell GroupWise, or IMAP/POP3 compatible mail server, and is driven by proprietary Intradyn software. In addition to the aforementioned E-mail search capabilities, other features of the platform include:

- Single instance storage of E-mail and attachments

- The ability to access the appliance over the Internet (Web browser) or through Outlook clients (2003/2007)

- 256-bit AES encryption for data stored on tape

- Auditing features, including the tracking of every access to the system by date, time, and user

- Support for retention policies

New features of the ComplianceVault offerings are made possible via a software upgrade, which is free to existing customers with a software maintenance contract. These features include remote monitoring control, enhances searching/auditing reports, and the above-mentioned ability to expand storage to over 30 TB.

In addition to Intradyn's ComplianceVault offering, Intradyn partner Imation also offers their own version of the ComplianceVault technology (called Imation ComplianceVault), which includes the user's choice of Exabyte tape autoloaders (VXA-2, VXA-320, LTO-2, or LTO-3).
